Omweer is a new makers' festival on Texel, aimed at the people who actually make films, series, photography, design and content. A project by Soeterd BV. First edition 29–31 May 2026.
Omweer is for the people who actually make creative productions. Filmmakers, photographers, designers, illustrators, writers, composers, content creators — anyone whose work eventually appears somewhere. Where many festivals function primarily as marketplaces for distribution, sales and deals, Omweer wants to make room for meeting, exchange and renewal among makers themselves.
Not only directors and producers, but also camera operators, editors, production designers, art directors, set dressers, sound designers, VFX artists, photographers, graphic designers, typographers, copywriters and screenwriters. Their craftsmanship is what ends up on the screen, in the magazine, on the wall.
A festival that doesn't begin at a red carpet, but at the conversation that follows. No sales booth, but a workspace. Across disciplines.
The creative sector is changing profoundly. First film moved from celluloid to digital. Then streaming and series changed how work is produced, told, and distributed. Photography went digital, analogue came back. Design moved from print to screen to interaction. And now AI is sharpening everything again — from generative images and text to synthetic voices and automated editing.
In this fast-changing time, makers need a moment to stop, seek each other out, and rethink their craft. Omweer wants to be that moment.
An island forces concentration. The journey is a buffer — a train, a ferry, a bike. And once you've arrived, you stay. No subway home, no last-minute diversion.
Texel is also a place with its own character: dunes, beach, historic villages, rugged nature, a strong makers' community, and a name that comes from the Texel dialect. "Omweer" means thunderstorm in that dialect — a short, intense summer storm that clears the air. An image that fits exactly what we want to be.
Omweer is organised by a small core team, supported by a programme committee and a large number of volunteers and guest curators. The team will be expanded during 2026.
The programme committee consists of eight to ten guest curators from different disciplines who, together with the core team, set the editorial lines. The full line-up will be announced in April 2026.
